The 25-year-old became the most expensive player of all time when he moved to the Bernabeu from Tottenham Hotspur last summer for around £85m, and he could be about to break the world transfer record for the second time if he moves back to the Premier League with United.

Bale was known to have been a target for United during David Moyes’ time in charge, and he has now become Louis van Gaal’s top target for the winter transfer window as an alternative to former Old Trafford hero Cristiano Ronaldo.

It is thought that Real are ready to consider letting the Welsh wide-man go, with manager Carlo Ancelotti seemingly struggling to find a place for him in the team with summer purchases Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez also competing for places in the attacking midfield department.

United also signed Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid this summer, and the Red Devils have their eye on the likes of Sami Khedira and Fabio Coentrao as well in a potential triple raid on the Spanish giants.
