The Saints forward is recovering from a knee ligament injury, but according to reports on Goal.com, that has done little to detract interest in the 25-year-old, who scored 15 Premier League goals last season.

Spurs have made Rodriguez one of their top targets for the January transfer window, and if the deal goes through it would allow the player to link up with former Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino at White Hart Lane.

The Argentine boss wants a versatile striker in the winter window after missing out on Danny Welbeck from Manchester United, who instead joined North London rivals Arsenal.

City are understood to have made contact with Rodriguez’s representatives over a potential deal and the England international could boost the club’s homegrown player requirements for both the Premier League and the Champions League.

Meanwhile, the source adds that Liverpool are long-term admirers of Rodriguez and are closely monitoring his situation with a view to a potential transfer.

Southampton have offered Rodriguez a five-year contract but the player has been concentrating on his recovery from injury and wants to keep his options open.
