Summer signing reveals admiration for United star.
Real Madrid’s summer signing James Rodriguez has revealed his admiration for Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria and hopes to emulate his success at the Bernabeu, according to Goal.com.
The Colombian international was brought in to Real as a direct replacement for Di Maria, who made the surprise move to Old Trafford after his superb form for Madrid last season as they won the Copa del Rey and Champions League double.
The Argentine became United’s record signing after his fine form in La Liga, and Rodriguez has hailed his predecessor’s impact during his time in the Spanish capital, saying he helped make history at the club.
Rodriguez has not got off to the best of starts since joining Real from AS Monaco, but is widely regarded as a potentially world class talent, and he admits Di Maria is an inspiration to him as he seeks to also make history for his new team.
He said: “As for Di María, he is a great player. He made history here and I have a lot of respect for him. I have only just joined, but I want to make history with Real Madrid as well.”
Rodriguez was also full of praise for his current team-mate Karim Benzema, who was in fine form this weekend as he scored twice in the 5-0 win over Athletic Bilbao, silencing critics who had slammed some of his recent performances.
He added: “Benzema scores and provides assists and we all hope he can keep hitting the mark.”
