Arsene Wenger sent scouts to monitor the 23 year old during a recent Europa League clash and received a glowing report and will now look to land the Dutchman.

Celtic are said to be keen on keeping hold of the former Groningen man but Arsenal are ready to test their resolve with an offer when the transfer window reopens.

Wenger saw back-up man Thomas Vermaelen move to Barcelona and could well be looking to strenghten his central defensive options, not least as his side is once again suffering with multiple injury concerns which have left Calum Chambers having to fill a right-back berth of late.

Virgil van Dijk has certainly impressed since moving to Glasgow in June 2013 but clearly a move from the Scottish top tier to the Premier League is clearly a big step up in terms of class but one Wenger may well feel the big Bhoys star is capable of making.
