Despite it only being October, the Gunners are facing a bit of an injury crisis with several key players set for long lay-offs.
Defensively, Wenger is without Mathieu Debuchy for the next three months and with Thomas Vermaelen leaving during the summer, he has a shortage of experienced defenders.
The Frenchman will try and put this right by signing Hummels, who is regarded as one of the best defenders in the world and shone in Germany’s World Cup winning side.
The 25-year-old has hinted that he may be willing to leave Borussia Dortmund and although he would be an expensive acquisition, there is no doubt that the centre-back would improve Wenger’s defence immediately.
Manchester United have chased Hummels for several months and would surely be willing to match anything that the FA Cup winners offered.
The German international has been targeted by Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal to be the man to add experience to his defence after the likes of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand left during the summer.
