The Gunners defender has been suffering from tendinitis in both Achilles tendons for months now. Although it seemed like good news that he would not need surgery, it is a massive blow for Arsenal to lose a player of his quality for so long; especially given their current defensive crisis.

29-year-old Koscielny has not made an appearance for Arsenal since their 2-0 loss to Chelsea last month, and with a case like this there is no telling how long it will be before he is back to his best.

Arsene Wenger is understandably devastated by the news that his compatriot will be unavailable for so long, and admitted that the club’s recent defensive failings were in large part down to the France international missing.

“You cannot think that he will be available in two weeks’ time,” he said.

“Then you have to see how he responds. He will not be available for three or four weeks. Inflammation you can never predict. He could not go on so we had no choice.

“You miss him every time you concede a silly goal. But we have conceded some with him there too. Ideally we want him there but could we have stopped the goals without Koscielny? I say yes so I think it would be a little bit escaping the real responsibility.”
