Arsenal saw a three goal lead against Anderlecht go to waste in midweek and haven’t been all that solid at the back for much of the current campaign and it’s no surprise that Wenger would be looking to bring in a defender or two in January.

Wenger is keen on West Ham’s Winston Reid and Celtic centre-back Virgil van Dijk, two options that clearly would be within Arsenal’s budget and seemingly players who would jump at the chance of a move to the Emirates Stadium.

French international Laurent Koscielny is out injured and Per Mertesacker has been in poor form all season and the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona has left the north London club very short of options.

26 year old New Zealand international Reid is out of contract next summer so could be available ‘on the cheap’ whilst Celtic may struggle to keep hold of Dutch defender Van Dijk if Arsenal make an official approach.
