The 77-year-old has apologised for his comments, but anti-discrimination body Kick It Out have claimed that Whelan shouldn’t be chastised due to his age.

“You cannot castigate Dave Whelan because of his age,” said chairman Lord Ouseley.

“We must recognise as a diverse society that we have people of all backgrounds, ages and characteristics.”

Kick It Out are clearly of the opinion that while the comments made by the Latics owner can be seen as inappropriate and unacceptable, there was no racism intended by the former professional footballer; and that his remarks were simply a a product of the generation gap.

This all took place as Whelan defended the appointment of new Wigan boss Malkay Mackay, the Scot also currently under investigation for alleged homophobic, sexist, and racist comments during his spell with Cardiff City.

Mackay took charge of Wigan for the first time against Middlesbrough, the game finishing 1-1 after Patrick Bamford cancelled out Shaun Maloney’s opener.
