Real Madrid Star Gareth Bale Among BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Nominees

Welsh ace amongst Britain’s finest for 2014.

Real Madrid and Wales forward Gareth Bale is amongst the frontrunners to be named the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year for 2014, the Daily Mirror reports.

The £85million most expensive footballer in the world is one of the 10 shortlisted contenders for the award, put together by an expert panel of sports specialists and announced on The One Show by 2012 winner Sir Bradley Wiggins.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a personally successful year in 2014, picking up a Champions League winners medal in May before playing a staring role in Wales’ unbeaten start to qualification for Euro 2016.

However, despite Bale’s inclusion the bookies favourite remains to be golfer Rory McIlroy.

F1 driver Lewis Hamilton has also been shortlisted after winning his second World Championship this weekend.

Other nominees include boxer Carl Froch, who retained his WBA and IBF super-middleweight titles with victory over George Groves at Wembley in May, 10,000metre European Champion Jo Pavey, Winter Olympics gold medallist Lizzy Yarnold and triple Commonwealth Games gold medallist Max Whitlock.

The winner will be announce on December 14th at a televised event at the SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow.
