Currently the most ever paid for a ‘keeper is the £33m Juventus shelled out to Parma for the services of Gianluigi Buffon back in 2001, but Los Blancos will eclipse that price to land de Gea.

Madrid are desperately on the lookout for a new option between the sticks with increasing concerns over the capabilities and longevity of current No.1 Iker Casillas.

Head coach Carlo Ancelotti has doubts over whether Casillas is good enough to be relied upon at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu anymore and has also has concerns over backup stopper Keylor Navas.

Meanwhile de Gea has been in fine form for the Red Devils once again this term and has arguably been their most consistent player over the past two seasons.

The 24-year-old put in another Man of the Match display during the 3-0 win over rivals Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday and United will be reluctant to sell the Spaniard.

However, a return to his home nation and the chance to play for the Champions League holders may be too hard to resist for de Gea.
