The 27-year-old moved to La Liga in 2012, but failed to cement a first team place with Spanish giants Barcelona. He is currently midway through a season long loan at Premier League side West Ham, but revealed that he would have preferred a return to Arsenal.

“I would have liked to go back [to Arsenal] but they did not want to,” he said.

“That’s life. Cesc Fabregas also wanted to return to Arsenal but they did not want to exercise their option. It is surprising when you see what he is doing at Chelsea. He is stronger than before.

“I could play in the Champions League in Italy, Napoli, Roma, or in Turkey. I could have played for Marseille but my priority was to return to England, for me and the family. I discovered a club that I did not know but it’s working well.”

Sam Allardyce’s Hammers will host Arsene Wenger’s Gunners on Sunday, and it will be the first time that Song will be facing his former club.

Many Arsenal fans believe Wenger has been too stubborn with the likes of Alex Song and Cesc Fabregas, and that he should have brought both players back to the Emirates when he had the chance.

The North London club are badly in need of a defensive midfielder, and while Song may not be the best around, he could have proved a solid addition on loan for a season.
