The 21 year old has started just five La Liga games this season and is behind Pepe and Sergio Ramos in Carlo Ancelotti’s central defensive pecking order.
The youngster is valued at around £20m and is a player Jose Mourinho knows very well indeed, the Blues boss having brought Varane to the Bernabeu during his stint in charge of the Spanish giants.
Mourinho has publicly stated how he landed Varane ahead of Man United back in 2011;
“I was on holiday and in Madrid. Zinedine Zidane arrived with a DVD and I thought, ‘That player, with two years’ work with us, would be fantastic’.
“Varane had one foot at Manchester United but Real Madrid are very strong and Rapha came to us.”
Mourino attempted to sign Varane over the summer and will look again to complete the move for the Real Madrid star, who could be seen as a long term replacement for John Terry.
Though Mourinho signed Kurt Zouma with a similar aim it’s fair to say that the former Saint-Etienne man hasn’t really had a chance to impress at the West London side thus far.
