Manchester United will continue the chase for their long-term defensive target next summer…

Man United have edged closer to bringing their prime defensive target to Old Trafford, Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, but look likely to have to wait until the summer to complete the deal.

Reports in the Daily Star confirm that a January deal is unlikely, but reveal that Louis van Gaal is confident of landing the £35m-rated German next summer. United’s interest in the player has remained high since last summer, as they look to strengthen their defence.

Hummels remains United’s top defensive target although Diego Godin has been highlighted as an alternative option, while according to the source, reports in Spain also suggest that Aymeric Laporte, who is valued around £25m, is on United’s radar.

The German press are suggesting that Dortmund are taking United’s interest “very seriously” as they sit second bottom of the Bundesliga table, and are facing the inevitable prospect of selling several of their prize assets next summer.

Hummels is said to be increasingly disillusioned with how things are going but he is keen to continue to fight it out with the prospect of a Champions League run still on the cards. Dortmund topped their group to set up a Last 16 meeting with Juventus.
