Arsenal could be set to lose a key player if Diego Simeone gets his way…
Respected Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has confirmed that Atletico Madrid are convinced they can sign Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla at the end of this season.
Rumours have persisted since the summer that Atletico were interested in signing the Gunner’s maestro, but no move has materialised.
However, in recent weeks there have been whispers Cazorla could exit the Emirates at the season’s end and Balague has now confirmed that Diego Simeone is keen on snapping up the 30-year-old.
He does not go far as to suggest the Spaniard has agreed to any move or a deal is at all in place but says Atletico will definitely attempt to sign him.
“Atletico seem assured that they can convince the little Asturian wizard to return to Spain and certainly he could fit in well at the Vicente Calderon,” he writes for Bleacher Report.
“It does not mean he will sign for Atletico, but it does mean that Atletico will surely try to poach him this summer.”
The continuing rumours about the future of Arda Turan could increase the La Liga club’s need for signing the forward as Balague notes, the team is infinitely poorer when he is absent.
With Cazorla’s contract reportedly set to expire in 18 months time, this transfer saga looks set to run and run until he either signs a new Arsenal contract or leaves.
And he would certainly be a big miss with his recent performances against Manchester City and Middlesbrough highlighting his pivotal role in the Arsenal side.
