Thierry Henry feels he may have settled football’s most divisive debate.
Former Barcelona striker Thierry Henry has revealed that he believes that, while Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greats, Lionel Messi is better, according to Goal.com.
When asked who he felt was the better player, Henry replied, “I played alongside Leo, so there’s my answer.”
“I have an enormous amount of respect for Cristiano, as someone who maintains such a high level for several years,” he continued.
While Lionel Messi is the only player to have won the Ballon d’Or four times, Ronaldo is the current title holder, having helped Real Madrid win ‘La Decima’ in 2014.
But Henry, who spent three years alongside Messi at the Nou Camp, believes that both players have cemented a long-lasting legacy, making Messi versus Ronaldo one of the greatest rivalries the sport has ever known.
“People realise it, of course, but I feel like we still don’t grasp the real measure of what these two are doing. In the future, people will look back in awe at the continuity, the goals and the pressure that comes along with doing this for so long,” Henry added.
Despite reportedly wanting out of Barcelona, Messi has maintained his incredible scoring record this season with 37 goals in 34 games in all competitions. Ronaldo boasts a not too dissimilar record, with 39 goals in 36 games.
It is clear to see why the debate over the two may never be settled.
“I’m full of respect for Ronaldo, but I played with Leo and had extraordinary moments with him, we lost and won together, so that is all I have to say on Leo,” Henry concluded.
