The goal came on the cusp of half time. Daley Blind produced some fine work on the left wing before picking out the 25 year old goal-scorer with a neat pass.

Manchester United were denied a penalty earlier in the half when Ciaran Clark hauled Wayne Rooney to the ground, but referee Roger East waved away the striker’s protests.

They struggled to break down a resolute Villa for long periods and are arguable a bit fortunate to lead at the break.

After Arsenal’s win over Liverpool earlier in the day, Manchester United can move eight points clear of the Anfield-based side in the race for the top four if they can hold on for the victory.

Aston Villa are currently 16th and face a battle to avoid the drop.
