The Portuguese defender started against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night, but before that hadn’t played for the team since March 11 against Schalke. Brazilian Marcelo has been starting in the left-back position ahead of him, but was suspended against the club’s city rivals, and looks unlikely to drop out for the side anytime soon.

This will be good news for the Premier league quartet, who are all interested in the 27-year-old according to the Express. Still, whether any of the teams need him is another matter.

Manchester United spent huge money bringing Luke Shaw to Old Trafford in the summer, and of course Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo have each shown an aptitude for the position. Liverpool have the rather defensively naive Alberto Moreno, but invested heavily in the young Spaniard and will likely persevere with him.

Chelsea and Arsenal both have two good options each, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Filipe Luis at Stamford Bridge, and Nacho Monreal starting for the Gunners with Kieran Gibbs as backup.

Unless one of the above clubs lose faith in their current options, it’s hard to see a role for Coentrao at any of them – despite the reports in the Express.
