As the report reveals, the 26-year-old had been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford. It goes on to suggest he is set to stay put in Germany though, with Louis van Gaal set for disappointment. The imminent departure of manager Jurgen Klopp, as well as the unknown future of teammate Ilkay Gundogan, only made the rumours about the defender grow. However, this news could end the transfer saga before it even gets going.
BVB sporting director Michael Zorc said: “It made sense that Mats was thinking about his future but I always pointed out that we plan [for the future] with him.”
This will be great news for incoming Westfalenstadion boss Thomas Tuchel, who will want the strongest side he can possibly muster for his first season with the Bundesliga giants.
