Manchester United are set to complete the signing of Lazio defensive midfielder Lucas Biglia, according to The Sun.

The 29-year-old enforcer has impressed since moving to the Italian capital two years ago, helping his Stadio Olimpico side to secure a Champions League berth for this season, and Biglia is an experienced battler who can offer Louis van Gaal further strength in depth in the centre of the park.

Prior to his move to Rome, the Buenos Aires-born star spent seven years plying his trade in Belgium with Anderlecht before earning his ‘high-profile’ Serie A switch.

Louis van Gaal has already moved to strengthen his central midfield options with the signings of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin. although he did opt to use utility man Daley Blind as a centre-back for Man United’s opening Premier League fixture with Tottenham, suggesting that the Dutch midfielder may be set for a campaign spent in the defence. As such, the Dutch manager may feel the need to further bolster his defensively-minded midfielder contingent.

Van Gaal has made extensive moves in the summer transfer market, bringing in the aforementioned midfielder pair Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin, as well as Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian and Sergio Romero.

The United manager has also looked to balance the books with the sales of Nani and Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce.

Last term, the experienced coach helped Man United to retain their footing in the Premier League top four and van Gaal will be looking to build on that showing this term. He has certainly had the backing in the transfer market to do so, and must now ensure the Red Devils do their talking on the pitch.
