Manchester United set for comeback after injury nightmare, but may yet be axed by Louis van Gaal

Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell finally looks set to end his injury nightmare and return to first-team contention at Old Trafford.

The 21-year-old has been out of action since the tail end of 2014, but appears to be on the road to recovery.

His last outing came in December, when he featured on loan for Leicester City against Manchester City.

Since then, he has undergone knee surgery and has faced a long spell on the sidelines.

Now, however, he can finally look to get back into training, with the midfielder tweeting that he was delighted to return ‘after so long’.

The youngster arrived at the club from Crewe Alexandra for £3 million in 2012 [according to the Mirror], but is yet to truly make his mark with United.

He last represented the Red Devils in August, delivering an unconvincing performance in the infamous 4-0 Capital One Cup defeat to MK Dons.

It remains to be seen whether he can make his mark under Louis van Gaal; he has only one year left on his contract, and having not been given a squad number for the coming season [both according to the Mirror], it is not yet clear whether he is in the manager’s plans for the coming campaign or for the future beyond that.

Indeed, it may be that the Dutch coach will look to return the Englishman to full fitness only to offload him during the January transfer window.

Similarly, while Powell may be returning to training, United have reinforced heavily in midfield since he last represented the side. Van Gaal can now call upon the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger, as well as Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini.
