Chelsea plan to hijack Arsenal move for U-21 midfield powerhouse; Liverpool & PSG also keen on youngster

William Carvalho was one of Arsenal’s big midfield targets this past summer, but after failing to secure a deal (as with many of Arsene Wenger’s targets during the offseason) another major rival could be poised to sweep him off his feet.

According to the Metro, Chelsea have emerged as a club interested in landing the 23-year-old defensive midfielder from Sporting CP. Tutto Mercato Web reported that Liverpool and PSG have also expressed interest in Carvalho.

The Portuguese star has become a staple of Sporting’s defensive midfield, making 59 league appearances and scoring five times in the past two seasons.  After winning four Player of the Month awards and the Primeira Liga Breakthrough Player of the Year award in the 2013-14 season, Carvalho helped Sporting win the 2014-15 Taca de Portugal.

Arsenal find themselves short at midfield ahead of their upcoming Champions League clash with Olympiacos, with Mathieu Flamini absent, and Arsene Wenger could definitely do with bolstering this position during the January window.

William Carvalho was the Player of the Tournament of the UEFA Euro Under-21 Championships, despite missing a costly penalty that resulted in a loss for Portugal against Sweden in the Final.

Unfortunately, Sporting was eliminated from the Champions League in the play-off round after lose 3-4 on the aggregate to CSKA Moscow. Ironically, they later lost to Lokomotiv Moscow in the first match of the Europa League group stage.
