Any intentions Manchester United, Liverpool or Real Madrid had of signing Lazio midfielder Lucas Biglia during the transfer window will have to be shelved after the player suffered an injury.

The deep-lying playmaker has been eyed by both the Red Devils and the Merengues and, as a rare talent offering midfield grit and superb creativity, it’s easy to see why the European giants might be keen on his signature.

There had been some speculation in recent weeks that, in light of their impending transfer ban imposed by Fifa, Real might have moved quickly to bring the Argentina international to the Bernabeu, while United may be considering the player as an upgrade on Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has made an indifferent contribution since moving to the club from Bayern Munich during the summer.

However, any chances Biglia had of moving to Real would appear to be dead after the midfielder sprained his ankle during the capital club’s Coppa Italia defeat to Juventus.

Injury will rule him out for three weeks [a Lazio statement, as per Football Italia], and while the knock is not as serious as first feared, it is impossible that he will pass a medical before the end of the transfer window.

The Metro reported recently that Liverpool were also keen on the midfielder.
