Arsenal boost as Bellerin commits future to club and deals blow to Barcelona

Hector Bellerin has allayed any fears Arsenal fans may have had that he was headed for the exit, with the Spaniard confirming that his future lies at the Emirates, as reported by Goal.

History isn’t exactly on Arsenal’s side, as they have regularly seen players achieve greatness only to be pinched by a bigger club. Robin van Persie made the controversial switch to Manchester United, Mathieu Flamini moved to AC Milan at the peak of his powers, and perhaps the biggest one was Cesc Fabregas returning to Barcelona for arguably well below his market value – the list goes on.

Bellerin insists he has no desire to return to his former side though, and claims he is happy at Arsenal and it’s where he sees his future.

“I left Barca without looking back. I left focused on London and Arsenal and I am really happy there,” he said.

“I signed a new deal last year and there’s still a lot in front of me. It’s a club that’s forming a great team, with players like Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil.

“My future is there and I am happy where I am. A lot of things can happen in football, but I am at Arsenal, giving my all for the club.

“I am not thinking of going anywhere else.”

The young right-back has been sensational since breaking into the first team, not only fighting off competition from Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers, but establishing himself as arguably one of the best full-backs in the Premier League.

There are unquestionably still inconsistencies in his game – with his crossing certainly needing work – but it would be a massive blow for Arsenal to lose him to Barcelona or anyone.

Committing his future to the north London club will be a real boost, and Arsenal fans will be hoping he (and they) are rewarded with some ambitious transfer activity this summer. Arsene Wenger has long been criticised for his inactivity in the transfer window, and if he wants to keep his top talent at the club then he probably needs to continue signing players of Alexis and Özil’s quality.
