Euro 2016 predictions part 5: How far England will go – mixed expectations among COS writers

Posted by

CaughtOffside’s Euro 2016 prediction pieces have so far been tournament wide, including picking which team will be crowned champions and which player will take home the Golden Boot.

But now it is time to focus on England. How far do our writers think the Three Lions will go in France? Ironically it is our non-English reporters who are most optimistic about our chances!

Prediction: Semi-finals

“I can envision them in the semi-finals, absolutely. They’ll win Group B, beat whatever third-place team they face in the round of 16, then most likely face Portugal in the quarter-finals and beat them too. After that though, I suspect they may hit a wall against France or Spain, but you never know.”

Prediction: Semi-finals

“I was quite disappointed with Roy Hodgson’s squad selection but England still should have enough quality in the final third to reach the later stages.”

Prediction: Semi-finals

“England should be more than confident of getting out of their group as they’ve got enough in their squad to get to the latter stages of the tournament. However, in my opinion, they’ll lack something against the top sides and depending on the draw, they’ll eventually get unstuck.”

Prediction: Semi-finals

“Well l wasn’t going to jinx us and say the final, was I?”

Prediction: Quarter-finals

“Heart says semis and beyond. In reality, quarters before being outdone by Portugal…again!”

The rest of the staff fear that England could fall at our first major hurdle…

Prediction: Last 16

“We’ll get through the group (it’s impossible not to with half the third-placed teams progressing…), but we’ll lose in the round of 16 against our first real opponents of note.”

Prediction: Quarter-finals

“As far as the draw allows them to go. As soon as England face a decent side, their defence will be exposed. Another quarter-final exit against Portugal could be on the cards, and if they get that far, then it won’t be in style.”

Prediction: Last 16

“England are strong enough to qualify for the last 16, but will come unstuck against stronger opposition.”

Prediction: Quarter-finals

“Honestly I think this will all depend on who gets who in the knockout stages. As soon as England come up against top-quality opposition, I think they’ll crumble, and I predict that will be in the quarter-finals. A lucky draw might see them into the semis, but I feel that’s their limit.”
