Roma sign Tottenham defender for £1m fee

Italian giants Roma have signed Tottenham defender Federico Fazio on a one-year loan according to their official website.

Roma will pay a £1 million loan fee and have the option to sign the 29-year-old defender for £2.67 million over the course of the season.

Fazio revealed that he is happy to have joined Roma and that he cannot wait to start training and break into the team.

“I am very happy to join a great team like Roma,” the 29-year-old Fazio said. “I really want to start training and get to know my new team-mates and coach.”

The Argentinian defender made 192 appearances for Sevilla before joining Tottenham but he has made just 32 appearances to the Premier League outfit.

The experienced defender failed to make a single Premier League appearance for Spurs last season.

The 29-year-old has been deemed surplus to requirements for Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino, and an exit was expected this summer provided that the right offer came in.

Fazio was behind Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen in the pecking order and it was clear that the Italian defender would have been unlikely to break into the Tottenham side next season.
