Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is ready to take a risk and wait until the transfer window deadline to sign Southampton defender Jose Fonte according to the Express.

Per the source, Mourinho has identified the Portuguese international defender as his top transfer priority in what would be his fifth signing of the suffer.

Mourinho is even reported to be prepared to enter a stand-off with the board over his pursuit of the experienced defender.

The Red Devils have already spent £145m on Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly this summer.

The Express also have reported that Southampton are desperate to keep Fonte at the club and are willing to offer a two-year contract extension.

The Euro 2016 winner currently has just one year left on his contract and despite being offered a new deal, he has yet to agree on personal terms which in turn could pave the way for a cut-price move to Old Trafford.
