If you are one of those football fans who can’t get their head around why any top player would go to the Chinese Super League during the peak years of their career, perhaps this will help you understand.

Brazilian midfielder Oscar is reportedly set to take third spot on the list of football’s highest paid players once his proposed transfer from Chelsea to Shanghai SIPG goes through.

According to The Times, the 25-year-old – who is currently on £90,000 (before tax) for seven days’ work at Stamford Bridge – has been offered net wages of £400,000 a week and will therefore earn £20.8m a year in the Far East.

In re-reporting this story, The Sun claim that Oscar will earn more than Lionel Messi makes at Barcelona!

Messi makes £270,000 weekly, per The Sun, who claim that Oscar will only be behind Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo (£440,000) and Hebei China Fortune icon Ezequiel Lavezzi (£493,000) in the football money stakes once he joins Shanghai.
