Chelsea keeping tabs on £30m-rated midfielder to solve Conte headache

Chelsea are reportedly still hopeful of landing Lazio midfielder Lucas Biglia this summer, although the numbers involved could really put supporters off.

The experienced Argentine midfield general has been a pivotal figure for the Biancocelesti, but he is about to enter the final 12 months of his current contract.

As per Calciomercato, the capital club are keen to sign him to a renewal, but as of yet there hasn’t been any significant progress and so speculation has spread over his future.

It’s claimed that Chelsea were interested in Biglia last summer when contract negotiations with Lazio stalled, although club president Claudio Lotito placed the £30m price-tag on him which seemingly put the Premier League leaders off.

Given that he is entering the final year of his contract, coupled with the fact that he’s now 31 years of age, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte will surely hope to drive down that valuation significantly if he is to revisit his interest in the player at the end of the season.

If not, that is a huge fee to pay for a player nearing the latter stages of his career and with his current employers having no real strength to demand such a fee.

Time will tell if the figure drops, but ultimately from a footballing aspect, Biglia will offer experience, solidity and good technical ability on the ball to add to Conte’s midfield.

With Chelsea on course to win the Premier League title this season, they will need to add quality and depth to their squad to be able to compete on various fronts, including the Champions League.

As a result, with N’Golo Kante, Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas battling it out over three spots for most of this season, they’ll need to strengthen in that department to cope with the busier fixture list and Biglia could be an important squad player.
