As with any season, there are a number of high-profile players entering the final months of their respective contracts. This year seems different though.
Different in a positive way, as the quality of the players that could potentially be available on free transfers next summer is staggering.
In turn, several clubs from around Europe or even domestic rivals will be looking to swoop next year, with players allowed to open discussions with other clubs from February onwards.
Meanwhile there will of course also be the temptation in some instances to agree to a cut-price deal in January to avoid losing specific players for nothing just six months later.
However, as detailed by Sport, there are countless exciting options on the table for the clubs, ranging from young players with a long future still ahead of them to wily old veterans who could bring a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to the dressing room.
It’s worth noting that Sport have led with the angle of players that Barcelona could potentially swoop for, but the list will be of interest to many clubs at different ends of the spectrum hoping to add real quality to their respective squads ahead of next season.
Emre Can, Max Meyer, Leon Goretzka, Ross Barkley, Kepa and Jose Maria Giminez are named within the younger category of possible free agents, and they would certainly be worth consideration having shown their talent with plenty of room for improvement still to discover.
Elsewhere, Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Daley Blind, Stefan De Vrij, Joao Moutinho, Fernandinho, Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Yaya Toure and Zlatan Ibrahimovic complete the list with a copious amount of titles and individual accolades between them.
Wages and signing-on fees will also have to be taken into consideration, but some of the players named above could be absolute steals on free transfers, provided that they can be convinced not to ink new terms on a renewal between now and next summer.
