‘Don’t see him as a Mourinho player’ – Pundit not convinced Man Utd will sign superstar

As reports continue to link Man Utd with a swoop for Real Madrid star Gareth Bale, one pundit isn’t convinced he’ll want to play under Jose Mourinho.

According to the Metro, the Welshman is wanted at Old Trafford again this transfer window, and so it remains to be seen whether or not a move materialises.

ESPN pundit Steve Nicol isn’t on board with it though, as he believes there are two major reasons standing in the way of the transfer happening.

“No, I don’t see him as a Mourinho player,” he is quoted as saying by The Express. “Bale is a player that you’ve got to give a lot of licence to to go and find the ball, to go and get it and then do what you do, which is score spectacular goals and use pace and all those things.

“I just don’t see him fitting in at United.”

While that could be debated, Nicol did also make an excellent point when it came to spending big on Bale being a risk given his injury problems over the last two seasons.

Bale has enjoyed his spell in the Spanish capital as he’ll one day walk away from the Bernabeu with a La Liga title and three Champions League trophies to show for his efforts among many other pieces of silverware.

However, after making 48 appearances in the 2014/15 campaign, he saw that figure fall to 31 the next year before making just 27 appearances last season. While he’s back fit now, he’s been limited to just 15 outings to this point, and so that has to be a concern for Man Utd.

Particularly if they’re going to splash out on him, it makes the Welsh international a risky signing, as coupled with the question marks raised by Nicol over his compatibility with Mourinho, it’s questionable as to whether he would be able to avoid injuries and be a regular presence on the pitch.
