Man Utd could break transfer record as Jose Mourinho wants quality £60m target

Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen to bolster his defensive options this summer, and he wants Leicester City’s Harry Maguire to be the solution.

The Red Devils are seemingly set in that department given the Portuguese tactician can already call upon the likes of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo.

However, it appears as though he wants to add quality to his backline still as The Sun claim that he is keen to see Man Utd splash out £60m to acquire the services of Maguire.

The 25-year-old has undoubtedly impressed from his time with Hull City through to his spell with the Foxes while emerging as a star of England’s World Cup campaign in Russia this summer.

Whether or not he’s capable of making that next step up in quality to deliver on the biggest stages at the highest club level for Man Utd remains to be seen if a move materialises, but Mourinho is seemingly convinced.

Should a deal for the £60m-rated defender go through, it would set a new transfer record for the most expensive British defender of all time, with The Guardian noting that Kyle Walker currently holds that title after his £53m move to Man City in 2017.

Given Maguire’s defensive solidity, physical presence, quality in possession and attacking threat, he could be a sensible addition for Man Utd, although it would certainly set up fierce competition for places in defence to raise question marks over a potential exit to make room for him.

Nevertheless, if United are to sign him, it will take a sizeable fee to prise him away from the King Power Stadium, but based on the report above, that doesn’t seem to be putting Mourinho off.
