Newcastle United’s opening goal against Nottingham Forest showcased a meticulously planned set-piece routine, something that’s becoming a common theme in the modern game.

Following a teasing delivery from Kieran Trippier that forced Matz Sels to intervene, Newcastle executed a well-worked set play. Miguel Almiron played a short corner to Trippier, whose precise long delivery found Bruno Guimaraes unmarked at the back post. Guimaraes volleyed home expertly, reminiscent of a similar goal he scored against Brentford at St James’ Park last season.

The goal sparked jubilant celebrations among the away fans, while legendary striker Alan Shearer shared his reaction on social media, posting on X: “A great set piece. Bruuunnoooooo” along with two clapping emojis.

Shearer was also quick to respond to Guimaraes’ second goal of the evening, which gave Newcastle United a 3-2 lead, writing: “Bruuuuuuunnnoooooooo” along with five clapping emojis.

Stephen Kelly, who was commentating on the game, was equally impressed by Newcastle’s first goal, describing it as a “wonderful” piece of play by the visitors. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra, the former Spurs defender shared his admiration for the executed set-piece routine.

This win moves Newcastle United on to 36 points and ten points behind Aston Villa in fifth place.
