Enzo Maresca tells Leicester winger he has to improve

Stephy Mavididi moved from Montpellier to Leicester City in the summer and their was a real buzz around the King Power stadium when the Foxes saw their new man in action.

The 26-year-old initially looked a class above the Championship scoring ten goals and providing four assists within the first 29 appearances in England’s second tier, but his performances have all been quite flat ever since.

Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca has stood by Stephy Mavididi amidst his challenging start to 2024, following the winger’s continued goal drought in the 2-2 draw against Hull City.

Mavididi faced a tough outing on Saturday, contributing to the team’s dropped points by conceding a penalty after bringing down Regan Slater in the box. Despite this setback, the 26-year-old found it challenging to make his mark in the attacking third throughout the match.

This recent display was yet another match marked by poor form, Mavididi persisted on the pitch as Leicester sought a decisive goal. Since the New Year’s Day victory against Huddersfield Town, the winger has struggled to contribute with either goals or assists from open play.

Speaking to Leicestershire Live, Maresca stated: “Stephy has to improve. a little bit, his body language,” he added. “It’s part of the season where he’s not been at his best. For some weeks, he’s been very good. It’s something normal, when you are in March and you play almost 45 games, between Championship, Carabao Cup and FA Cup.”

“I think more. [Albrighton and Wanya] could be an option. Stephy is always there, something can happen. At least he gave us a good feeling.”

It has been a real drop off in form for the former Montpellier man but he clearly has the quality to excel in the Championship; he shown that in the first half of the campaign.
