Manager could be sacked if club fails to win promotion

Southampton manager Russell Martin’s job is dependent on the result of the promotion playoffs.

The first leg of the playoff semi-final against West Brom finished in a 0-0 draw at the Hawthorns Stadium.

The second leg is on Friday and Southampton will feel confident of beating them at home.

The winner will then face either Leeds United or Norwich City in the final at Wembley, which will be the promotion decider.

However, according to Daily Mail, if Saints fail to win promotion, manager Russell Martin’s job will be at stake.

Martin managed to lead his side to finish 4th, with 26 wins, 9 draws and 11 defeats.

To give perspective of how well Southampton performed, Ipswich Town who won direct promotion in 2nd place, had just 2 more wins. However, they lost only 6, and drew 12.

4 managers in 1.5 years at Southampton

Southampton had a disappointing season last year, which resulted in relegation, after an 11-year stint in the Premier League.

The club have had 4 different managers in the last 1.5 years. The club sacked Ralph Hasenhüttl in November 2022, and was replaced with Nathan Jones. He only lasted 3 months as he failed to make an immediate impact. In February 2023, Ruben Selles took in charge of the club as the caretaker manager for the remainder of the season, which ended in relegation for the club.

Last summer, Martin took over, signing a 3-year contract, and has made quite an impact. However, whether the club will stick with him if they fail to get promoted remains to be seen.
