Baggies keen on signing former Liverpool defender.

Check in to Manchester City vs West Bromwich Albion

West Bromwich Albion are said to be keen on bringing former Liverpool defender Chris Mavinga to the Hawthornes this summer according to the Express & Star.

The 21-year-old, now at French club Rennes, has caught Steve Clarke’s eye after impressing since breaking into the team this season.

Mavinga began his career at Liverpool but failed to make a single appearance. He spent part of the 2011 season on loan at Genk in Belgium, making nine appearances before joining Rennes on a permanent deal latter that summer for £1 million.

Not a stranger to controversy, though, he broke the nose and jaw of Standard Liege player Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez in 2011 after the two collided during a match whilst at Genk. After joining Rennes he fell out with manager Frederic Antonetti and was forced to train with the reserves alongside star man Yann M’Vila.

Despite his troubles, however, he’s still a highly regarded left-back and has represented France at a number of youth levels, most recently gaining 9 under-21 caps.

Former club Genk had expressed an interest in bringing him back to Belgium but Rennes have valued him at around €6 million, pricing out of a move back to the Jupiler League. Albion remain undeterred by the cost and could look to spring a move for him at the end of the season.
