Manchester City have suffered a blow after it was revealed that they have missed out in their attempts to sign PSV defender Jetro Willems according to The Express.

The Etihad side were reportedly keen to bring Willems to the club as they saw him as having the potential to become the long term successor to current City left-back Gael Clichy.

The two clubs were reportedly discussing a deal which would City’s young Swedish striker John Guidetti join the club.

Guidetti is well known in Holland after a supremely successful loan spell with Feyenoord last season.

The forward scored an impressive twenty goals in just twenty three games and PSV were reportedly keen to bring Guidetti to Holland on a permanent basis.

But Guidetti poured cold water on the deal after revealing such is his love for Feyenoord, he is unable to play for any other team in the country.

That forced Manchester City into pulling out of the deal and Willems now looks set to extend his stay with the Dutch giants.

The nineteen year old has signed a new deal with the club that will keep him at PSV until 2017.

Willems joined PSV from Sparta Rotterdam in 2011.
