Spanish source AS claims that Man United are keeping tabs on Real Madrid pair Angel Di Maria and Pepe as the Old Trafford side look to strengthen their squad this summer.

With Sir Alex Ferguson to retire at the end of the current campaign it is likely that whomever steps into the breach will look to bring in a few players of their own so as to put their stamp on the Man United squad and with Real Madrid said to be keen on something of a Bernabeu clear-out it is possible that the two named targets could be made available this summer.

Man United suffered with a few defensive issues during the early part of the season and given Rio Ferdinand’s age and Nemanja Vidic’s struggle to stay injury free there could well be a need to bring in a new centre-back option but one wonders if Portuguese international Pepe is the man the Premier League side would be looking at.

The experienced defender has well documented temperamental issues and has seen his first team chances at the Bernabeu limited by the emergence of Raphael Varane, indeed the 30 year old didn’t start recent Champions League matches against Borussia Dortmund and Galatasaray but it would be a big surprise if Man United opted to chase the powerful centre-back.

Interest in Angel Di Maria seems entirely more realistic. Only Mesut Ozil provided more assists in La Liga last season and though Jose Mourinho has apparently grown exasperated by Di Maria’s displays of late the former Benfica man has still managed to rack up nine goals and ten assists in all competitions this season.

Given that Nani, Luis Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young, have all failed to impress during the current campaign a move to bring in the talented wide-man may well be taken up by Man United.
