Wealthy French side Monaco are set to make an audacious attempt to sign Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany according to French newspaper L’Equipe.

The provincial side won the Ligue 2 title this year and are keen to build a team capable of challenging PSG for the Ligue 1 title.

The club’s wealthy owner is ready to give manager Claudio Ranieri significant backing in the transfer market over the coming months as they look to re-establish Monaco amongst the best clubs in Europe.

Ranieri has reportedly identified Kompany as the man to lead his team to glory. The Belgian centre back was an integral part of the Manchester City side that lifted the Premier League title last season and was notable by his absence when he suffered a spell on the sidelines during the current campaign after suffering with injury.

The club are thought to be keen to wait for their new manager to arrive though before making any decisions on player sales.

It is thought that Kompany did not share the best relationship with previous boss, Roberto Mancini, but the centre back may be more inclined to turn down Monaco’s advances since the Italian left the club.

It is thought Monaco are ready to bid £26 million to prise the player away from the Etihad Stadium.
