Sporting Lisbon have reportedly rejected an initial approach made by Liverpool for talented young defender Tiago Ilori, according to Sky Sports.

Brendan Rodgers has been a long time admirer of the defensive starlet and has been locked in talks with the Portuguese giants over a deal for him and even sent club representatives to Lisbon this weekend with the hope of moving talks along.

It is thought that Liverpool had tabled an opening bid of around £3 million for the london-born 20-year-old, but Sporting are demanding double that.

It is also claimed that Sporting are hoping to convince Liverpool to throw Moroccan midfielder Oussama Assaidi into the deal on loan, but so far no agreement has been reached.

“The doors are open to negotiate, but for a just price,” a source from the Portuguese club confirmed.

“We are not disposed to sell any of our players this summer.”

The Lisbon club have been expected to hold a fire sale this summer to ease some of their heavy off field debts, but Ilori is thought to be one of the names that they hope to hold on to with a new contract waiting to be signed.

Ilori made his breakthrough into the side’s first team this season, making 12 appearances and scoring once.
