Liverpool are said to be taking an interest in Newcastle United winger Hatem Ben Arfa according to French source L’Equipe.

Brendan Rodgers is thought to be a long term admirer of the French international who has had something of an up and down time of it since moving to St James’ Park in August 2010.

Injuries and average form have been peppered with outstanding goals and occasional strong performances and the former Marseille man may feel the time is right to consider a fresh challenge having seen his Magpies side fall from a fifth place finish in 2011/12 to a relegation battle in 2012/13.

Ben Arfa has managed just 35 Premier League starts over the course of his time at the St James’ Park side.

Rodgers may feel that Ben Arfa could add a new attacking threat to his Anfield side but one would imagine that Alan Pardew would not be keen on losing the quality Newcastle United man.

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has invested £25m+ in new additions over the course of the past two transfer windows and may therefore be ready to consider offers in pursuit of balancing the books ahead of likely summer transfer activity.

Youngsters Suso and Raheem Sterling impressed in wide attacking roles last term but Rodgers may feel Ben Arfa a better option as the pair continue their rapid progression in the Liverpool set-up.
