Arsenal have reportedly agreed a fee for Brazilian international Luis Gustavo according to a number of sources, a move that would make the Bayern Munich man Arsene Wenger’s second signing of the summer following the free transfer capture of young French forward Yaya Sanogo.

The Gunners have been tracking the 26 year old for much of the summer and recent comments by the player’s agent certainly gave the impression that the former Hoffenheim man was considering his future at the Allianz Arena under new boss Pep Guardiola.

Gustavo was already very much a bit-part player at the Bavarian side and the arrival of Thiago Alcantara and Mario Gotze would only further serve to push the adaptably midfielder further down the Bayern Munich pecking order.

Luis Gustavo is most commonly used in a central defensive midfield role and saw his chances of filling that berth in the Bayern Munich side compromised by the arrival of Spanish international Javi Martinez last summer, a move that saw the Brazilian start just 16 Bundesliga fixtures last term.

Arsenal could well do with some steel in their midfield to help add balance to a side full of creative talents. Wenger failed to adequately replace Alex Song following his move to Barcelona last summer and Abou Diaby’s continuing struggle to stay clear of injuries has left the Emirates Stadium side without much in the way of ‘bite’.

The Premier League side are said to have made an offer of £14m for Gustavo, a fee that the Bundesliga side may feel is worth accepting as Bayern Munich look to balance the books having invested heavily.

Luiz Gustavo wasn’t named in Bayern Munich’s squad for their opening day victory over Borussia Monchengladbach last night.
