Real Madrid could consider a move for Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero after talks to sign Tottenham star Gareth Bale broke down, CaughtOffside understands.

The Spanish giants have made Bale their number one target all summer, and were reportedly willing to pay as much as £100million for the Welshman, though they have now hinted that they will not go out of their way to bring him to the Bernabeu this year.

Spurs have been determined not to sell their star player, who was in sensational form last season with 21 goals in the Premier League, and appear not to be backing down on their stance despite the 24-year-old’s desire to leave the club.

They may now be rewarded for holding firm, as Real’s impatience to land a big name this summer has seen them look elsewhere for additions upfront.

Having sold Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain to Napoli for £32million earlier this summer, Carlo Ancelotti’s side are arguably looking a little short upfront, with Karim Benzema failing to find his best form for much of last season.

The La Liga runners-up have already brought in some young talent in Malaga’s Isco and Real Sociedad midfielder Asier Illarramendi, but are known for their preference of signing big-money ‘galacticos’ when possible.

One player that would fall into that category is Aguero, who was a hit in his previous spell in Spain with Real’s local rivals Atletico Madrid, scoring 101 goals in 234 games for the club before making a £38million move to big-spending Manchester City.

The Argentine was a hit in his first season in England, scoring 30 goals as his side won the Premier League title at the expense of rivals Manchester United, with Aguero himself netting the crucial late winner on the final day of the 2011/12 season against Queens Park Rangers at the Etihad Stadium.

However, he struggled with injuries in his second season and could not find his best form as City finished runners-up in both the league and the FA Cup final. With new manager Manuel Pellegrini bringing in two new strikers in Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic this summer, City may be willing to listen to offers for Aguero.

The 25-year-old will want to be first choice for his club, and may also feel he is better off at Real Madrid if he falls out of favour with the new manager at City.

Real have also been linked with Liverpool’s Luis Suarez at points this summer, though the Uruguayan now seems set to commit his future to the Anfield club for at least another year.
