Arsenal are reported to have made an offer for Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye according to Sky Sports News.

Arsene Wenger has been very quiet during the summer transfer window having brought in just one new signing, that in the form of young French forward Yaya Sanogo, but may now be forced to act swiftly following defeat in Arsenal’s first Premier League fixture at home to Aston Villa.

That defeat, coupled with an injury crisis, may well have left Wenger aware of his squad’s shortcomings and may feel that the addition of French international Cabaye could offer a new dimension to a midfield that is perhaps a little one dimensional.

Though Cabaye is creative he does also have a defensive edge and is certainly a player who could add balance to the Arsenal midfield though one wonders just how likely the Magpies are to sell the 27 year old this summer.

Cabaye joined Newcastle for a fee of just £4.8m back in July 2011 and played a pivotal role in helping Alan Pardew’s side to a surprise fifth place finish and though the former Lille man had a less effective second season at St James’ Park he still has a lot to offer.

Yohan Cabaye may well be interested in a move to join national team colleagues Bacary Sagna, Laurent Koscielny, Olivier Giroud and Abou Diaby at the Emirates Stadium though clearly also has a number of compatriots at Newcastle United. A move to Arsenal may become all the more appealing if Wenger’s side can get past Fenerbahce to secure a spot in the Champions League group stages.
