Sunderland are on the verge of signing experienced Napoli defender Andrea Dossena on a season-long loan deal, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

The Black Cats have already been extremely busy in the close-season transfer window, with new head coach Paolo Di Canio having brought an incredible 13 new players to the Stadium of Light since the end of the previous campaign.

However, the Italian has not finished there, with Di Canio now understood to be hoping to secure a deal for Napoli’s Italy international before the window closes for business for the year at midnight on Sept 2.

Dossena has been made surplus to requirements in Southern Italy following the recent arrival of new manager Rafa Benitez in Naples earlier this summer, with the 31-year-old having initially been expected to join fellow Serie A outfit Torino last week, only for the move to fall through at the very last minute.

And that has now seemingly paved the way for the attacking left back to make a return to the Premier League, three years after he left Liverpool to join Napoli in the first place for a fee of 4.25 million euros, with Dossena expected to undergo a medical at Sunderland on Monday ahead of his move to the Black Cats.
