The north London club decided to part company with the Portuguese on Monday following their shock 5-0 thrashing by rivals Liverpool in the Premier League at White Hart Lane the previous afternoon.

That humiliating reverse against the Merseysiders left Tottenham languishing way down in seventh place in the top flight after 16 rounds of matches this season, five points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City in the final Uefa Champions League berth.

And with Spurs director of football Franco Baldini having previously worked with Capello during his stints in charge of Real Madrid, AS Roma and England, where he acted as the veteran coach’s right-hand man, many expect the ailing club to make an approach for the serial-winning coach at the end of this season.

However, following today’s news that the experienced 67-year-old could be stalling on a new deal with the Russian Football Association, who want Capello to stay on in his current role until they host the 2018 World Cup finals, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy may now be even more hopeful of getting his man this summer.
