The former Brazil Under-20 international’s contract with the Portuguese champions runs out on June 30 2014 and so the 26-year-old will be available on a lucrative Bosman-style free transfer this summer.

However, City are not the only club on the Continent said to be chasing the player at present, with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Serie A champions Juventus also understood to be keen on the holding midfielder.

The Portuguese giants themselves are also believed to be desperate for their star man to remain at the Dragao by putting pen to paper on a new £50,000-per-week contract, however, Fernando is said to have already rejected his employer’s offer as he has his heart set on a move to Eastlands next season.

And City themselves are understood to be very confident that the Brazil-born midfielder, who is now eligible to represent Portugal at international level, will also reject advances for their rivals suitors in favour of joining them.
