Barcelona were apparently sufficiently impressed by the showing of Man City captain Vincent Kompany in their recent Champions League encounters to now consider the Etihad Stadium star as a viable replacement for veteran defender Carles Puyol according to Football Direct News.

The big 27 year old Belgian netted at the Nou Camp and could well be tempted by a possible move to replace Puyol, with the 35 year old set to leave the Catalan side in the summer.

Kompany has been a rock in the heart of the Man City defence for a number of seasons and is by some distance Manuel Pellegrini’s most effective performer at the back and the Man City boss will not want to lose the former Hamburg man.

Man City signed Kompany in a £6m deal back in August 2008 and the centre-back became the club’s captain in 2011 and has made a total of 226 appearances.

Kompany is sure to be a part of Marc Wilmots 2014 World Cup plans and appears to be happy at Man City though the club’s inability to make an impact at Champions League level may be a concerned.

Pellegrini saw Kompany sent off ten minutes into Man City’s 2-0 win over Hull City on Saturday and will miss the next three Premier League fixtures.
