Respected Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri has claimed that Arsenal were moving in on a deal to re-sign Man United striker Robin Van Persie but even though personal terms were reached with the Dutchman the sacking of David Moyes has effectively put the move on the back-burner.

The 30 year old former Arsenal man may well now be happy to remain at Man United, not least if his national team coach Louis van Gaal does, as expected, become the permanent successor to Moyes.

Arsene Wenger may elect to re-ignite his interest in Van Persie as he still very much needs to strengthen an attack that relies too heavily on Olivier Giroud.

Van Persie netted 30 goals in his first season at Man United but his second campaign has been blighted by injuries though the lethal finisher has still managed to rack up 18 goals in 28 appearances.
