The Merseyside giants are known to currently be on the look out for more defensive cover at the back at Anfield for next season after leaking 50 goals in their ultimately failed attempt to win the Premier League in the previous campaign.
And now as a result head coach Brendan Rodgers is said to be keen to land a new commanding central defender when the summer transfer window reopens for business, with the Saints’ Croatia international believed to be top of the Northern Irishman’s wish list.
So much so in fact that the Reds have now lodged a bid worth £8m with the south coast club for the 24-year-old, who recently told Croatian newspaper Sportske Novosti: “I also heard something about that.
“I feel great at Southampton and my contract is valid for the next three years.
“So the only thing I can say right now is that the club is the one who decides.”
