Liverpool have made an offer of £14.2m for Bayern Munich playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri, claims Swiss paper Blick, reported in the Daily Star.

The 22-year-old Swiss star performed superbly at this summer’s World Cup, bagging a hat-trick in the Group Stages, but his future at the Bundesliga champions is uncertain – having largely struggled for regular game time last term.

Blick reckons that while Liverpool’s offer has yet to be accepted, it is close to Bayern’s valuation, and the German giants will consider the offer, with Juventus also keen on acquiring the attacking midfielder this summer.

The player himself has been coy on speculation regarding his future recently, claiming that he’s happy at Bayern, and a transfer is not imminent.

“It is the time of year when much is written, but as we all know, there is very little truth behind it,” he said.

“As you all know I am currently on holiday so I am not in talks with other clubs nor have I spoken with any journalists. I have a contract with FC Bayern until 2016.

“My advisors are in regular contact with the responsible people at FC Bayern so there is no reason for speculation.”

The reports seem fairly strange considering Liverpool have already signed Lazar Markovic and Adam Lallana this summer for a combined fee of around £45m. Both the new recruits can play in a number of attacking midfield positions, and are set to compete with the already excellent Coutinho and Raheem Sterling for starting positions behind spearhead forward Daniel Sturridge.
